SUBSTITUTES
Substitutions
are now an accepted part of the game but it wasn't until the 1965/66
season that they first appeared. Even in that initial season a
substitute could only be used to replace an injured player and it was
only the following season that a change could be made for tactical
reasons. Two changes were permitted from 1988/89
whilst the current three substitutes ruling came into effect in 1995/96.
To date, a total of 358 City
players have made a Football League appearance from the bench with
the top few being:
For
36 players their only appearance for the
Imps was as a sub with Jack
Hobbs' injury-time appearance against Bristol
Rovers on January
15th 2005 being the shortest City Football League career to date.
The first City player to be named as a substitute was Ken
Fencott at Doncaster
Rovers on August
21st 1965 (City losing 4-0) but it wasn't until the next
game at Darlington
two days later that our first sub was used. Roy
Chapman replaced Bunny
Larkin, one of our goalscorers, in our 2-0 win.
In all 13 appearances were made from the bench in
1965/66 with Fencott leading the way with five. Alan
Pilgrim became the first Imp to make his Football League debut
for us from the bench when he replaced Fencott in a 7-0 defeat at Crewe
Alexandra on March
18th 1966.
Fencott's five appearances was equalled by John
Gregson in 1967/68 and was increased to seven in 1968/69
by Jack
Lewis (his goalscoring appearance versus Grimsby
Town on September
21st 1968 being the first time a sub scored for us).
Seven was equalled on numerous occasions until Derek
Bell made eight appearances in 1980/81.
David
Gilbert made 14 appearances from the bench the following season,
a record that then stood until 1997/98
when Steve
Brown appeared 15 times. Phil
Stant equalled that in 1999/00
and Dave
Cameron beat it with 21 sub appearances in 2001/02
before Simon
Yeo smashed it with 28 appearances from the bench in the
Football League in 2003/04.
We first used two subs in a game on our return to the
Football League versus Hartlepool
on August
27th 1988 with Willie
Gamble replacing David
Clarke and then with a couple of minutes left Rick
Ranshaw replaced Bobby
Cumming. Three subs were first used in a 3-1 home defeat to Cambridge
United on September
23rd 1995. First David
Puttnam replaced Matthew
Bound, and then David
Johnson replaced Joe
Allon before Puttnam himself was replaced by Jason
Minett.
A sub being subbed is a relatively rare occurrence,
which first occurred at Hereford
United on March
13th 1991 when Paul
Dobson replaced Puttnam and was then injured and replaced by Steve
Stoutt.
Graham
Bressington (at home to Doncaster
Rovers on February
12th 1992), Gavin
Gordon (at Walsall
on November
10th 1998), Scott
Willis (four minutes after coming on at home to Cambridge
United on December
14th 2002), Leon
Mettam (10 minutes after coming on in the home game against Hereford
United on February
20th 2007) and Shane
Clarke in the final minute of the 3-1 defeat to Rotherham
United at Sincil Bank on January
12th 2008 are the only five Imps to have been sent off after
appearing as a substitute.
Steve
Sherwood became the first goalkeeper to appear from the bench
when he replaced the injured Andy
Leaning at Wigan
Athletic on April
Fools Day 1995. Since then Alan
Marriott has been substituted three times due to injury, being
replaced by Matthew
Ghent at Carlisle
United on December
2nd 2000, Darren
Horrigan at home to Southend
United on March
16th 2002 and Ayden
Duffy at Chester
City on April
12th 2008. The latter of these three came after Marriott had
saved an early penalty from Kevin
Ellison.
From
goalkeepers to goalscorers and a total of
124 Football League goals have been scored
by Lincoln City substitutes with Simon
Yeo leading the way with nine (seven coming in the 2003/04 season).
Ben
Wright became the first substitute to score more than once in a
League game after coming on, his brace in the 5-2 defeat at Barnet
on March
22nd 2008 proving to be just a consolation effort though. Tony
Lormor (at Port
Vale in the League Cup on August
17th 1993) and Yeo (against Scunthorpe
United in the first leg of the 2002/03
Division Three Play-Off Semi-Finals on May
10th 2003) being the only two Imps to have netted twice in other competitions.
