RECORD SEQUENCES
The 1-0 win at Shrewsbury Town on September 9th 2006 was
our sixth consecutive away win in the Football League thus setting a
new club record whilst a 3-1 success at Wycombe Wanderers a fortnight
later extended that record even further.
The seven-game winning run ironically began at Wycombe
on Easter Monday 2006 and continued with success at Shrewsbury in the
final away League game of the 2005/06 season. If you then add on the
four victories at the beginning of the 2006/07 campaign to the repeat
successes at Shrewsbury and Wycombe then it meant the history books
had to be amended! The run came to an end at Boston United, who
secured a 1-0 success at York Street on September 27th 2006. A
summary is as follows:
Our previous record had stood
at five, a feat we had achieved on four previous occasions, the last
time being in 1992/93. That run, however, which saw victories at
Northampton Town (2-0), Bury (2-1), Darlington (3-1), Scarborough
(1-0) and Crewe Alexandra (2-1) came to an abrupt end with a 5-1
defeat at Rochdale!
The previous five-match winning away sequences came in
1968 when the Imps won the last four games of the 1967/68 season (1-0
at Exeter City, 1-0 at Newport County, 3-1 at Brentford and 5-1 at
Bradford Park Avenue) plus the first game on the road the following
campaign (1-0 at Halifax Town); in the Division Four championship
season of 1975/76 (4-2 at Cambridge United, 3-2 at Crewe Alexandra,
3-0 at Workington, 3-1 at Watford and 4-2 at Doncaster Rovers) and in
1989/90 (1-0 at Halifax Town, 1-0 at Exeter City, 1-0 at Aldershot,
3-0 at Torquay United and 2-0 at Wrexham).
The end of 1981/82 and beginning of 1982/83, meanwhile,
saw our best ever run of home Football League victories as we won 14
on the trot at Sincil Bank. Again the run started on Easter Monday,
April 12th 1982, with a 2-0 success over Huddersfield Town. The full

Ironically, it was Huddersfield
who ended the run, beating us 2-1 on December 28th 1982.
Ten matches is the most we have ever won consecutively,
this coming in the 1930/31 season. We lost the first game of the
season but then won the next 10 (six at home, four away) scoring 25
goals and conceding four before a home draw with Chesterfield ended
the run. We finished the season in second place in Division 3 North,
one point behind Chesterfield!

For our worst run of defeats
you have to go back to the Victorian era and 1896/97 when the Imps of
the day managed to lose 12 matches on the spin. Five of the games
were at Sincil Bank which is also the joint record for consecutive
home losses, matched in 1960/61 and again in 1998/99.
The seven away games on the
run, meanwhile, were the start of a longer sequence of 14 successive
away defeats, only ended by a draw at Woolwich Arsenal in September
1897. The 14-match losing run being as follows:-
Five games is our longest run
of consecutive draws in February/March 1981 and is also the record
for consecutive away draws on three occasions (last time in 1991). At
home the 3-1 win over Accrington Stanley on September 1st 2006
brought to an end a Club record run of six consecutive home Football
League draws.
The consecutive home and away draw record being:
Whilst the record home drawing run is
as follows:
Finally, another chapter in the Club's history books was
rewritten on September 12th 2006 with the 2-1 win over Macclesfield
Town at Sincil Bank extending the unbeaten League start to the season
to eight games - a feat never achieved before in the Club's previous
99 seasons in the Football League. The previous record had been seven
unbeaten matches at the start of a season, this occurring in 1901/02,
1950/51 and 1989/90.
The unbeaten start to the 2006/07 League campaign was
as follows:
