Born in Hull in December 1893, Archibald Roe played for six Football League clubs but only amassed 59 games and 18 goals. His clubs were South Shields (where he scored their very first Football League goal), Birmingham, Gillingham, Arsenal, City and Rotherham with 27 of his games and 12 goals (our top scorer in 1923/24) coming with us. Described as “hard as nails despite only being of moderate height” (he was 5’8” tall) he was a Sheffield publican at the time of his death, which occurred whilst he was visiting his daughter in Wigan.
