Following the Imps' return to the Football League following a season
in the Conference, three players joined the Club on loan from
Leicester City - namely midfielder Paul Groves, who later enjoyed
success at Grimsby Town, defender Grant Brown, who went on to
establish legendary status at Sincil Bank by becoming City's all-time
record appearance holder, and winger Dave Puttnam.
Dave started his professional career with home town team Leicester
City after he was spotted playing for Leicester United but, unable to
hold down a first team place at Filbert Street, he opted to link up
with the Imps when given the opportunity. After a successful loan
period with the Imps, he put pen-to-paper on a permanent move to
Sincil Bank in March 1990 for a fee of £35,000 and in the early
part of his Lincoln career was a regular in the first team squad.
A favourite amongst the supporters, Dave was named "Player of
the Season" in 1992/93 but a succession of injuries interrupted
his career when it was at its prime. The winger started just 21 games
over the following two seasons and left Sincil Bank for Gillingham in
October 1995 having made a total of 204 League and cup appearances
for the Imps under six managers.
Dave went on to play in 40 League games for the Gills before moving
into the non-League with Yeovil Town and despite a return to League
action with Swansea City in 1997, it wasn't long before he was back
on the non-League scene, ending up at Coalville Town in 2004.
