Born on November 4th 1905, Maidment joined the Imps from Sunderland (no Football League games) in January 1926 and proceeded to score 43 times in 126 League matches for City. He also netted four times in four FA Cup games and six times in nine Lincs Cup ties. He was, however, described by Benny Dix in his book ‘Cock O’The North’ as a “football enigma. He had every physical advantage in height and build, combined with natural ability in ball control and shooting power. A stranger seeing him on one of his best days would acclaim him as an International in the making, but unfortunately those exhibitions were too few and far between.” He left City for Portsmouth in May 1931 but only appeared three times in the League for them before 44 games (eight goals) for Cardiff ended his League career. He also played non-League football for Workington, Blyth Spartans ands South Shields whilst his elder brother Jim also played for City.
