Born in Ecclesfield near Sheffield in 1911, Tom Johnson followed in
his fathers footsteps and played for Sheffield United between
1929 and the outbreak of World War 2 making 183 League appearances as
well as an FA Cup finalist in 1936. Joining City in March 1946, he
was centre half and captain of the 1947/48 title winning side when he
was described as a great character and an absolute tyrant on
the field, but his vigour and his enthusiasm got results. He
retired in December 1948 after making 75 appearances for City and
died in August 1983.
