Dublin-born inside forward Arthur Fitzsimmons is one of the few
players to have been capped at full international level whilst an
Imp. In his case it was the last of his 26 Irish caps (versus
Czechoslovakia May 1959). He began his career with Shelbourne
(playing twice for the League of Ireland) before a £18,000
switch to Midlesbrough in May 1949. He played 223 times in the
Football League for the then Ayresome Park side, scoring 49 times,
before joining City in March 1959 for £5,000. He played just
seven times before a £6,000 move to Mansfield where 62 games
brought a further 23 goals. Afterwards had spells as coach at
Drogheda, Shamrock Rovers, in Libya and the League of Ireland side.
