With a career record of 201 goals from 415 Football League
appearances, it's no surprise that Roy Chapman finds himself well up
there in the Club's all-time goalscoring chart with his tally of 77
being surpassed by just six other players.
Of his 175 League outings for City, meanwhile, just one came as a
substitute, but that created Club history as, when he replaced Bunny
Larkin at half-time during the visit of Darlington in August 1965, he
became the first City substitute to enter the field of play in the
Football League.
Roy had two spells at Sincil Bank. His first saw him bag an
impressive 45 goals from 105 League games whilst in his second, which
came after he spent three season with Mansfield Town (136 apps, 78
goals) saw him hold the title 'player-coach'.
Roy was in charge of team selection and the playing side of the Club
from March 1965 to October 1966 following the departure of Con
Moulson but City won just 16 times from his 68 matches in charge. He
was replaced by Ron Gray soon after the start of the 1966/67 season
but continued as a player until the following summer. In fact, his
best haul in front of goal came in 1966/67 when he scored 20 times
from 37 games.
He later returned to management with Stafford Rangers where he
achieved some success, winning the FA Trophy on two occasions and the
1971/72 Northern Premier League title but a brief spell in charge of
Stockport County, however, ended with the club having to seek
re-election although he will be best remembered by Hatters' fans for
bringing George Best to Edgeley Park in November 1975.
The father of Lee Chapman, who went on to play top flight football
for the likes of Arsenal and Leeds United as well as receive
international recognition at England U21 level, Roy later had a
second spell in charge of Stafford before joining Walsall Sportsco
FC. Roy died in 1983 aged 48.
