Born in Workington “Budgie” began his Football League
career with his hometown club making his debut in May 1969. By the
time he made his final appearance for Darlington in December 1995 he
had played in the L for 15 clubs, the most any one player has
appeared for, in addition to four Scottish League sides and he was
also on the books without making an appearance of another five League
sides! All told he played in 690 (+1 sub) Football League games and
over 100 Cup games. He was 42 years and 58 days old on his final
appearance for the Imps (v Rochdale 29/01/1994) the second oldest
known Imp to appear for the Club whilst his final appearance in the
Football League at the age of 44 years and six days makes him the
tenth oldest known to have ever played in the League.
