HAT-TRICK HEROES

Jamie Forrester's four-goal feat at Mansfield Town on Saturday 26th August 2006 was certainly worth the wait as the last time a City player scored four on the road was way back on March 19th 1930.

Carlisle United's Brunton Park was the venue and Henry Roberts was the man in form with his four goal tally, in a similar fashion to Forrester's exploits, leading to a 4-2 Division Three (North) victory for City.

It was the first of two four-goal hauls for Roberts in the 1929/30 season as a month later he was at it again in an 8-0 demolition of Tranmere Rovers. In total, he netted 23 League goals for the Imps from 33 appearances and a year later following his departure from Sincil Bank, he won a full international cap for England against Belgium.

Forrester's foursome at Mansfield saw him become the 15th player to have scored four or more in a competitive game for City and the 12th to do so in a Football League fixture. He was the first since Tony Lormor netted four in a 6-2 home win over Carlisle on the final day of the 1990/91 season.

The first City player to bag four in a game was Frank Smallman against Burton Swifts (5-1) in a Division 2 fixture at John O'Gaunts in February 1893 and prior to the turn of the century William Gillespie (v Worksop Town, 8-0) and Hugh Robertson (v Attercliffe, 5-0) both repeated the feat in FA Cup Qualifying fixtures.

The 1920s saw Harry Havelock (all four in a 4-3 win over Barrow in January 1926) and Billy Dinsdale (four in a 5-0 win over Durham City in April 1927) add their names to the list and after Roberts' brace in the 1929/30 season, the prolific Allan Hall got in on the act, scoring four in a 7-0 home win over Southport in November 1931.

Frank Keetley created a Football League record two months later with six second half goals in a 9-1 win over Halifax Town at Sincil Bank whilst the only other player prior to World War 2 to score four or more in a game was John Campbell who scored all five in a 5-3 win over Rochdale in 1936/37 and four in a 7-1 success over Wrexham the following season.

Prior to Andy Graver's six-goal haul in the record 11-1 win over Crewe Alexandra in September 1951, Ernie Whittle scored four times against Stockport County (6-0) eight months earlier.

To commemorate his six-goal haul against Crewe, Andy Graver is presented with the match ball by manager Bill Anderson. Looking on is goalkeeper Jimmy Jones.

The Club's all-time record goalscorer Graver followed Roberts and Campbell in turning in a second four-goal showing, with Blackburn Rovers the victims of an 8-0 drubbing at the Bank in August 1953.

You then have to turn the clock forward 22 years to find the next player on the list - Lincoln-born John Ward getting his profitable 1975/76 season off to a flyer with all four in a 4-2 League Cup win over Chesterfield. Five years later, Gordon Hobson got in on the act with four in an 8-0 win over Northampton Town whilst Tony Lormor's four goal salvo against Carlisle United ensured the 1990/91 season finished on a winning note.

Forrester's quadruple at Mansfield, meanwhile, was the 123rd time an Imp has scored a Football League hat-trick or better and he became the 76th different player to achieve the feat. He followed this up with successive League triples at Barnet (5-0) and at home to Rochdale (7-1) to become the first player since Andy Graver in 1951/52 to bag three League hat-tricks in the same season.

Gordon Hobson fights his way through the fans following his four-goal haul against Northampton Town in October 1980

The first hat-trick was Frank Smallman's aforementioned four against Burton Swifts in our 15th Football League game (the first hat-trick scored against us had been in our first ever game when Harry Hammond of Sheffield United scored three in our 4-2 defeat) and Smallman was also the first player to score three in a League game for us which he did at home to Walsall Town Swifts (3-1) in March 1893.

Donald Lees was the first of 24 players to score a Football League hat-trick away from home in the Club's record away win at Rotherham Town on December 2nd 1893. City won 8-2.

William Gillespie scored the first City hat-trick at Sincil Bank when Crewe Alexandra were defeated 6-2 on Boxing Day 1895 and two days later his brother Matthew Gillespie repeated the feat against Newcastle United (4-0), the first time we had had a hat-trick scorer in consecutive games. Harry Andrews in 1926 (4-0 v Accrington Stanley, September 13th and 3-3 v Crewe, September 18th) is the only player apart from Forrester to score a hat-trick in two consecutive League games.

Andrews' three in the draw at Crewe meant he was the first hat-trick scoring Imp not to finish on the winning side - a fate that has since occurred to Tom Cheetham (three in an 8-4 defeat at Accrington Stanley in 1947), Jimmy Hutchinson (3-6 home defeat to Bradford Park Avenue in 1948), Andy Graver (3-3 draw with Scunthorpe United in 1959), Dixie McNeil (3-4 defeat at Mansfield Town in 1973) and Gareth Ainsworth (3-3 with Scarborough in 1997).

Alf Horne scored a hat-tick of penalties versus Stockport County (3-0, September 1935), Jock Dodds netted three all against a different goalkeeper against West Ham United (4-3, December 1948), Billy Cobb on his debut versus Luton Town (8-1, December 1966) and Clive Ford in the first 11 minutes v Bradford Park Avenue (5-1, December 1967); all at Sincil Bank.

We have had two hat-trick scorers in the same match on five occasions:

26/12/1928 - Billy Dinsdale and Frank Pegg v Hartlepools, 7-1
21/04/1930 - Henry Roberts (4) and Tom Maidment v Tranmere Rovers, 8-0
12/11/1938 - Joe Clare and James Wilson v Wrexham, 8-3
03/03/1951 - Andy Graver and Johnny Garvie v Accrington Stanley, 9-1
18/12/1982 - Gordon Hobson and Derek Bell v AFC Bournemouth, 9-0

John Campbell and Andy Graver with seven apiece and Harry Andrews and Gordon Hobson with five each have the most hat-tricks for us whilst the opponents who have suffered most with Imps scoring hat-tricks against them are Crewe Alexandra (seven), Accrington Stanley (six) and Carlisle United (five).

The following is the full list of first class games in which players have scored hat-tricks in for the Imps:
