Football League Record
August 7th 2010 saw the start of the 112th season of the Football
League since its formation in 1888 and when City reached the
milestone of their 100th season in the competition in 2006/07 we
joined 23 other teams who had already competed in either the
Premiership or Football League in 100 or more of the seasons.
We were the first club to reach the 100th season mark without ever
playing in the top division whilst the 2008/09 campaign will be our
80th season in the lowest possible division!
We have won four titles (Division 3 North in 1931/32,
1947/48
and 1951/52
and Division 4 in 1975/76)
as well as promotions in 1980/81
and 1997/98.
However we have had to apply for re-election on 14 occasions (three
failures) and been relegated on eight occasions (once out of the League).
To date we have played 4376games,
winning 1581drawing
1060and losing 1735.
We have scored 6368goals
and conceded 6697.
Of the 133 sides to have competed in the competition we have met 129
with the original Accrington, two Welsh sides in Merthyr and Aberdare
and London based Thames the four we never played.
At the end of the 2009/10 season we had met each of the 91 other
clubs in the Premiership/Football League with the side we have met
the most being Darlington
and Rochdale
with 108. At the other end of the scale we have only met Aston
Villa and Norwich
City twice in the Football League whilst the 2009/10 season saw
us meet Burton
Albion for the first time.
Of the other 91 teams it is doubtful if any Imps' fan has seen Arsenal
(last in 1914/15), Chelsea
(1910/11) and Newcastle
United (1897/98) play at Sincil Bank for League points!
Chelsea,
Aston
Villa, Norwich
City and Burton
Albion are the only current members who we have yet to beat
whilst Middlesbrough
Ironopolis and Burton
Wanderers also avoided defeat against us. Forty-six wins against Doncaster
is our best total followed by 42 against Darlington.
We have lost at least one game against every side we have played
except Aston
Villa (two draws) whilst our least favoured opponents are Rotherham
United who have beaten us 39 times. Stockport
County, Rochdale,
Grimsby
Town and Chesterfield
have all won 37 times against us. We have drawn most against Darlington
with 33 and have met 14 other sides without yet drawing.
We have scored most goals against Hartlepool
United (170) with Crewe
Alexandra (169) and Doncaster
(167) just behind.
The most we have scored in a season is 121 (1951/52),
the most at home is 80 (1951/52)
and away 42 (1930/31).
The least we have scored in a season is 27 (1896/97
from 30 games; in a 46 match season it is 41 in 1978/79),
at home 16 (1910/11)
and away four (1900/01).
Grimsby
Town have found the back of our net on the most occasions (168)
with Crewe
Alexandra next on 153. The most we have conceded in a season is
101 (1919/20),
at home is 46 (1962/63)
and away 71 (1919/20).
The least we have conceded in a season is 25 (1980/81),
at home four (1901/02)
and away is 14 (1980/81).
